BALANCING ACT

— A Bold Balancing Act of Native and Exotic 2019

Location: Awabakal Country, Dudley

Photography: Laney Harman

Bringing a run-down front yard back to life as a bold frontage, oozing coastal and exotic vibes with layer upon layer of depth.

“Statement dracaena draco provides strong,

architectural form”

This transformation features a playful mix of exotic and coastal plant choices to merge two aesthetics. Grouped for similar sun and water requirements, the planting palette includes a mixture of colours, shapes and textures for visual appeal.

A layered ground covering of pig face spills over old brick for a wild touch. Off centre, statement dracaena draco provides strong architectural form. Building the charm of the property with an old, industrial feel is a unique, rustic letterbox made from recycled railway sleepers and corten, framed with sandstone boulders.

Catering to the high coastal winds and salt spray are a mixture of low maintenance, hardy plants. Rhaphiolepis, westringia and prostrate casuarina (better known as ‘Cousin it’), among succulents like aloe vera and golden barrel cactus are interwoven to vary textures, height and colour, while equally tough exotic olive trees frame each side to provide shelter.

The result? A low-maintenance, natural blend of coastal and exotic design, creating subtle street privacy while giving an airy outlook from within the home.
